Women's Soccer Sinks Lakers in Region 20 Semis

ARNOLD, Md. – The top seed Anne Arundel Community College women's soccer team defeated fifth seed Garrett College, 4-1, Wednesday in the NJCAA Region 20 Division II semifinals at Siegert Field. The Riverhawks advance to the DII championship game for the second consecutive season and will face third seed College of Southern Maryland at 12 p.m. at Siegert Field.

Emma Miga led AACC with two goals and an assist. Chloe Underwood and Jaylin Sheffield also scored for the Riverhawks (11-2-1).

Miga put the Riverhawks on the board in the 11th minute when she picked off an errant clearing pass and seeing the keeper had come out to play the same ball, fired into the open net from just outside the box.

Sheffield made it 2-0 AACC when she finished a give and go from Miga.

Garrett (6-8-3) got on the board early in the second half on a goal from Victoria Kovazh, but AACC tacked on two more in a two minute span later in the frame.

Megan Strevig lofted the ball to Underwood, who one-timed it at the far post in the 57th minute. Miga capped the scoring in the 59th minute when she tapped in a rebound off a free kick by Tina Tinelli.

Riverhawks' keeper Péla Saunders made five saves in the win.

The Riverhawks outshot the Lakers, 23-8, in the game, and maintained an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

AACC and Southern Maryland played to a 1-1 draw earlier this season in the two teams' divisional game in La Plata on September 17.

Admission to Saturday's championship game is $5 at the gate. Students with ID, AACC faculty & staff, and kids 12 and under are free.
