Volleyball Stages Big Comeback at WAU

TAKOMA PARK, Md. – The Anne Arundel Community College volleyball team staged a stunning comeback in a five-set victory at Washington Adventist Tuesday evening. After falling behind, 2-0, the Riverhawks won the final three sets to earn the win. Set scores were 8-25, 21-25, 25-23, 27-25, and 15-12.

Josalin Courtney recorded a career-high 12 kills on .333 hitting, also adding seven digs and an ace. Lluvia Owens-Pabon added nine kills, four aces and 17 digs. Mia Keen recorded 14 assists to go with seven kills and 19 digs. Bella Hadden recorded 18 assists.

The Shock (5-11) built up an early lead in the first set, holding the Riverhawks (6-10) to zero kills in the frame. AACC started gaining momentum in the second set and led by as many as three points midway through. An ace from Owens-Pabon knotted the set at 21-all, but the Shock closed it out on a 4-0 run.

The Riverhawks used a 5-0 run midway through the third set to take the lead, but saw WAU climb back in to twice get as close as one point, but AACC benefitted from a pair of Shock attack errors to close out the set and send the match to the fourth.

The Shock built up an 11-6 lead early in the fourth before the Riverhawks scored five straight on Owens-Pabon's serve – including a pair of aces from the sophomore in the run – to tie it up. The teams traded point with neither leading by more than two until late when WAU capitalized on a pair of Riverhawk errors followed by a kill to take a 23-19 lead. AACC scored three-straight to get within one, and the teams recorded two more ties at 24-all and 25-all before the Riverhawks scored three-straight and ended the set on a Keen ace, 27-25.

After a brief lead in the fifth, WAU came back to lead by two, 10-7, prompting AACC to take a time out. It was well planned as Keen scored three-straight points for the Riverhawks and they never trailed again, ending the set on a Jadyn Brown block.

Next up for AACC is the final regular-season NJCAA Region 20 divisional game, a 6 p.m. home contest against Montgomery College.
