Game Notes

(Arnold, MD) The Riverhawks handed the NJCAA DIII Region XX Titans of Community College of Beaver County a 64-point loss Friday night (Feb 8th) in front of a Riverhawks crowd with a 105-41 win. This division win is a big one for the Riverhawks as playoff season rapidly approaches.

After a tough loss to a strong Division II Catonsville team last week, the Riverhawks schedule afforded them a much needed and well-deserved rest and it paid off. Playing again with only five players, AACC came out of the locker room fired up and ready to play. Claiming the lead early, the Riverhawks would shoot 53% from the floor in the first period, while the Titans would struggle, hitting just 3 of their 19 shots. Marcelaine Augustin (Upper Marlboro/Riverdale Baptist) would set the tone for the game and finish the period with 10 points and 3 assists. Although the Titans would improve their shooting in the second period, hitting 36% of their shots, it was no match for the Riverhawks as they continued to play at a high level. With all five players scoring, the Rivehawks would end the 2nd period with 56% of their shots finding the bottom of the net and take a 56-19 lead into the locker room.

The Titans would hit the court in the 3rd period with a different game plan - give the ball to #42. The Titans forward, Island Bradley (Beaver Falls, PA/Beaver Falls), would begin to hit shots no matter where she was on the court, scoring 5 field goals and hitting 4 out of 6 from beyond the 3-point stripe. Bradley would end up being the only scorer for CCBC in the quarter with 14 points. While that was impressive, it would not be enough to overcome the growing Riverhawks lead, and seven Titans turnovers in the quarter would help AACC finish the quarter with 19 points and a lead of 42 (75-33).

The fourth quarter seemed to be just what the Riverhawks were waiting for. Catching their second wind, the team came out of the huddle and went to work. Lacey Hinkle's (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) inbound pass would find Augustine cutting to the basket and reaping the benefits of the assist. Taking their time and swinging the ball the Riverhawks would continue to score, while strong defense by Hannah Lieb (Annapolis, MD) and Lacey Hinkle forced Bradley further and further away from the 3-point line causing her to put up long shots that would not find their way home. While on the other end of the court, all five Riverhawks would score in double figures as they made their way toward the century mark for the first time this season.

CCBC's Bradley would finish the game with a double-double scoring 30 points and 17 rebounds.

The Riverhawks victory was fueled by the double-doubles of Augustin (20 points, 13 assists), Lieb (28 points, 18 rebounds), and Healy (18 points, 14 rebounds). Hinkle finished with 23 points and Caitlyn Stanbery (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Northern) had a breakout night scoring 16 points and 4 steals. To seal the deal, The Riverhawks would out rebound the Titans 52-31 and hit 68 points in the paint. All-in-all, a very good night for AACC and the Riverhawks fans.
