ARNOLD, MD - Anne Arundel Community College's men's soccer team secured a conference and division win with their 3-0 shutout against Howard Community College this past Tuesday night. The win improves the Riverhawks to 6-3 in the conference and 7-4 overall, while the Dragons of Howard drop to 6-6 on the season and 5-3 for the conference.
AACC found their rhythm early in the match, possessing and passing the ball extremely well while maintaining a strong defensive hold over the Dragons of Howard Community College. Freshman Logan Mayette (Millersville, MD/Old Mill) earned his fourth goal of the season and gave the Riverhawks the lead, scoring off an assist by sophmore Robert Masters (Annapolis, MD/Old Mill). Masters then went on to assist freshman Mayglin Estrada (Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala/Glen Burnie) who earned his first goal of the season and put the Riverhawks up 2-0. Estrada didn't waste any time and scored again for the Riverhawks on a deep assist from freshman defenseman Mark Woodard (Hanover, MD/Meade).
Starting the second half with a 3-0 lead, the Riverhawks continued to shut down the offensive efforts of Howard and controlled the pace of the game to their favor, leading themselves to the shut-out victory. Freshman goalie Alessandro Ertel (Bowie, MD/Archbishop Spalding) tallied two saves for the night, putting his season total to fifty-five. Ertel is now ranked 4th in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference for his 55 saves and 5th in the conference for his save percentage (.743).
For their next match-up, the Riverhawks will travel to Northern Virginia Community College to face the NJCAA DIII Region 20 Nighthawks on Thursday October 5th at 3:00 p.m.
