No. 8 Men's Lacrosse Upsets No. 6 Mercer

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The No. 8 Anne Arundel Community College men's lacrosse team pulled away in the second half as the Riverhawks handed No. 6 Mercer County Community College a 21-10 defeat Saturday afternoon.  John Thibodeau led seven Riverhawks scorers with six goals and a pair of assists.

Sam Weisshaar added four goals and four helpers, and Trevor Collier scored four goals and assisted another. Zachary Burns scored twice and assisted two others. Nick Barton and Peter Zercoe each notched a pair of goals, while Griffin Torrence scored one.

Mercer led, 2-0, four minutes into the game before AACC rattled off three goals in less than two minutes to take the lead. The teams traded goals with AACC leading, 4-3, at the break.

Nick Barton notched his first career goal to lead off the second quarter and edge the Riverhawks ahead by two. The teams traded goals the rest of the way with Mercer trying to play catch up, but never quite getting there. After a Burns man-up goal, Zercoe closed out the quarter with his first of the game to extend the Riverhawks' lead to three, 9-6.

AACC outscored its hosts, 5-1, in the third and 7-3 in the fourth to complete the upset.

Hugh Edwards earned the win with six first-half saves before bowing out to Cole Simmons, who, with Kolby Hood, combined for just three second-half saves.

AACC outshot Mercer, 38-24, and committed only 13 turnovers in the game. The Riverhawks went 2-for-4 on the man up, while killing off five of six Vikings' opportunities.

There's no rest for the Riverhawks, who host Jefferson Community College at noon Sunday on Siegert Field.
