Golf Wins Region Opener at Hagerstown

MIDDLETOWN, Md. – The Anne Arundel Community College men's golf team opened Region 20 play with a two-stroke victory over host Hagerstown Thursday at Maryland National Golf Club. Tim Brophy tied for first place on the individual leaderboard.

Brophy hit four birdies on the day to finish with a 76 (+5) on the par-71, 6,025-yard course. Matt Crawmer birdied the final hole to finish one stroke behind in a tie for third place with a 77 (+6). Darren Hoffman and Carter Lichok rounded out the scoring in a tie for eighth place at 12-over. Both had better back nines with Lichok cutting three strokes off his front nine score while carding four birdies on the day. Will Maddox cut five strokes off his front nine score to finish with an 87 (+16) in 13th place.

"The team really started to show signs of their potential today," said Head Coach David O'Donnell. "I am excited for the rest of the season. Hagerstown has a strong team this year and we are going to have raise our game to stay ahead of them."

Jameson Haynes, Sam Thompson, Danny Schell and Kyle Elliott also played the course, seeing Haynes finish with an 87, Thompson with a 90, Schell with a 93, and Elliott at 59-over.

"I was really proud of everyone's performance on course today, but even more impressed with them off the course. Once everyone was finished, they headed right back out to cheer on their teammates." O'Donnell continued, "It is really impressive how these guys have grasped the team concept in such an individual sport."

Hagerstown finished in second place (+37), followed by College of Southern Maryland (+59) and Carroll (+66). 

AACC continues Region 20 action at Swan Point Yacht & Country Club on Thursday, April 3. The match, hosted by College of Southern Maryland, tees off at noon.
