Cantrell, Young Named to All-Region 20 First Team

ARNOLD, MD – Two members of the Anne Arundel Community College men's basketball team have earned All-Region 20 honors, it was announced recently. Michael Cantrell and Jamar Young were both named to the Division III First Team.

Cantrell, who also earned All-Region 20 First Team honors in 2020, started 21 games for the Riverhawks, averaging 31.5 minutes per game. The Broadneck graduate shot 48% from the floor averaging 13.3 points per game. Cantrell was the Riverhawks' top defensive player and play maker, averaging 2.8 steals, 1.3 blocks, and 4.4 assists per game. He led Region 20 with 58 total steals, and ranked second in the region with 93 assists.

Cantrell recorded three 20+ point games, scoring a season-high 25 at Christendom on January 31. He was key in the Riverhawks' season-opening upset of No. 1 Sandhills with 16 points and 11 rebounds along with a 7-for-7 performance at the free throw line. On the season, Cantrell ranked sixth in the region shooting a hot 73.4% from the charity stripe.

Young, who was named to the All-Region Honorable Mention team in 2020, led the region with 7.6 rebounds per game, and recorded a double-double in five of the last six games of the year. Young led the Riverhawks with 16.9 points per game, and scored 20+ points on nine occasions, including 24 in the Region 20 semifinals against Westmoreland when he shot 73.3% from the floor (11-15).

Young was also key in the Riverhawks' season-opening upset at No. 1 Sandhills with a season high 28 points, shooting 76.5% from the floor (13-17) and pulling down seven rebounds.

Young, who earned a spot on the Region 20 All-Tournament Team, was named the Region 20 DIII Men's Basketball Player of the Month twice this season -  for games in November, 2021, and again for games in February, 2022.
