Garrett Outlasts Men's Basketball

ARNOLD, MD – It was a wild night at Jenkins Gym as the visiting Garrett College men's basketball team eked out an 86-81 win over host Anne Arundel Community College. The game featured seven lead changes, including five in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Rashod Ballard led AACC with a career-high 22 points and eight rebounds in just 24 minutes off the bench. Che Colbert added 19 points and nine rebounds, and Braeden Cavey joined in double-digit scoring with 13 points.

Garrett started the game on an 8-0 run and led by as many as 12 by the midpoint of the first half before AACC chipped away at the lead. Colbert capped a Riverhawks 7-0 run over the final four minutes of the half with a pair of free throws to give AACC their first lead of the game headed into halftime, 35-34.

Garrett quickly retook the lead in the second half and led by as many as seven, each time seeing the Riverhawks respond, retaking the lead on a Ballard layup before the 12-minute mark. The momentum shifted back and forth with the Lakers retaking the lead before Jack Taylor swished a three-pointer to tie it at 55-55.

The teams traded the lead five times in the remainder of the half, but saw Garrett use a 9-0 run late to take the lead for good in the final three minutes of the game. AACC twice got back to within two points, but saw the Lakers make three of four free throws in the waning seconds of the game to hold the lead.

AACC outrebounded Garrett, 44-43, and shot 81.5% from the free throw line (22-27).

The Riverhawks (7-10, 1-8 MDJUCO) wrap up their homestand Saturday, February 5 in a 3 pm game against Frederick Community College.
