Despite Balanced Attack, Men's Basketball Falls to #9 Cecil

ARNOLD, MD – The Anne Arundel Community College men's basketball team put forth a balanced team effort against visiting 9th-ranked Cecil Wednesday night, falling to the Division II Seahawks, 107-81. Five Riverhawks scored in double figures, led by 17 from Jamar Young.

Young added a team-high six rebounds and a pair of steals in the game. Braeden Cavey (12 points) and Che Colbert (10 points) rounded out the top scorers from the starting five, while Kanari Smith (10 points) and Matthew Kostacopolous (10 points) led the effort from the reserves.

Anne Arundel (6-7) matched Cecil's whirlwind pace early on in the game, catching the Seahawks off guard and prompting a 12-2 AACC run. Cecil whittled away at the 11-point deficit to get within four before the Riverhawks pressed on, distancing themselves by nine on a Smith three-pointer at the 10:06 mark. The Seahawks pressed on, generating a 10-2 run to get within striking distance before taking the lead on a three-pointer with 3 and a half minutes left in the stanza. AACC kept it to a one-possession game until the final minute of the half when Cecil closed out the clock with a 5-0 run to head into the locker room with a 51-43 lead.

Cecil (14-1) extended its lead to double digits early in the second half, and expanded the gap to 20 within the first five minutes of the stanza. AACC then went to work, scoring 11-straight points less than three minutes to cut Cecil's advantage back down to nine, 71-62. Second chance points were key for the Seahawks as they continued on for a 107-81 win.

Cecil totaled 26 second chance points to AACC's 14, and outrebounded their hosts, 46-39. The Seahawks outscored the Riverhawks 66-30 in the paint in their 12th-straight win.

AACC heads to Howard Community College on Friday, January 21, for a 7 pm Region 20 and Maryland JUCO game against the Division II Dragons.
