Men's Basketball Comeback Falls Short vs CSM

ARNOLD, MD – It came down to the wire for the Anne Arundel Community College men's basketball team as they hosted the College of Southern Maryland in a Region 20 game at Jenkins Gym Wednesday evening. AACC twice got within one point, but ultimately fell to the Hawks, 86-83.

Braeden Cavey shot 60% from the floor with five three-pointers en route to a career-high 31 points, and recorded his second-straight double-double with 11 rebounds. Michael Cantrell added 21 points on 62.5% shooting and a team-high five assists.

CSM led by 10 at the half, and extended its lead to as many as 14 before AACC went on a 12-2 run to get within four. A Michael Duffy three-pointer brought the Riverhawks within three, 60-57, at the 13-minute mark, and two minutes later a three from Cavey brought AACC to within two, 64-62.

The teams continued to trade baskets before a Cantrell jumper with 6:20 left got AACC to within one, 72-71, but a CSM three-pointer two possessions later edged the Hawks back ahead. The Riverhawks would get within one with 2:09 left on a Cantrell layup, but again CSM responded with a three-pointer to solidify the lead.

AACC shot a hot 51.6% from the floor, but gave up 15 points to the Hawks from 25 turnovers.

The Riverhawks host Westmoreland County Community College Saturday at 3 pm.
