ARNOLD, MD – The Harford Community College men's basketball team hit a late three-pointer to defeat host Anne Arundel Community College, 66-63, Saturday afternoon at Jenkins Gym. Anne Arundel had posted a 20-point swing in the game to lead by as many as nine with less than seven minutes to go.
Matthew Kern scored a career-high 12 points to go with a career-best seven rebounds off the bench. Jamar Young added 12 points and three boards, while Davon Jones finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
Harford led by 11 late in the first half, but AACC closed the gap over the last minute, capped by a buzzer-beater put back from Kern to make it 36-31 headed into halftime.
The Riverhawks kept up the pressure as the second half opened, taking a 40-38 lead less than four minutes into the frame. AACC extended its lead to nine with under seven minutes to play, but a 9-2 run by the Fighting Owls over the next three minutes shrank the advantage back down to just two, 60-58.
Harford sank five of its six free throws in the final 2:26, using a pair from Kyle Harkins to knot the game at 61-all with 1:53 left. Eli Curry followed with a pair with :58 left to put the Fighting Owls up by two.
Young brought AACC back with a pair of free throws with 37 seconds left, but coming out of a time out, Joshua Foote nailed a three-pointer with just 12 ticks left on the clock. AACC regrouped, but missed a last-chance three-pointer.
Overall the game featured 14 lead changes and 10 ties. The Riverhawks were whistled for 21 fouls in the game to the Owls' eight, setting up Harford for a 22-of-31 night at the charity stripe.
AACC (4-12) hits the road Wednesday, January 16, for a 7 pm game at Delaware Tech.
