Chesapeake Slips Past Men's Basketball

WYE MILLS, MD – The Anne Arundel men's basketball team saw an early lead fade away against host Chesapeake Wednesday evening, falling to the Skipjacks, 89-79. The game featured 17 lead changes and a pair of ties, and was close until late in the second half.

Michael Cantrell led five Riverhawks in double digit scoring with 17 points, also pulling down five boards. Davon Jones and Aaron McGriff added 13 points each, while Joseph Chase (12 points, nine rebounds) and Jamar Young (11 points, eight rebounds) finished just shy of double-doubles.

It was one of AACC's best nights of the season from beyond the arc as the Riverhawks hit 10 of 24 (42%), led by a pair each from Cantrell, Chase, and McGriff.

AACC used a 21-6 run spanning the middle of the half highlighted by a pair of treys and a steal to dunk combo from Cantrell to hold a 32-21 lead with eight minutes left in the opening frame. Chesapeake cut the lead to seven over the next two minutes before the Riverhawks pulled ahead again, extending it back to 14 on a Tayvon Williams three-pointer at 4:54. The Skipjacks started to come back again, but AACC held on to a 46-44 advantage headed into the break.

The second half was a tight affair, featuring 12 lead changes and a tie with Chesapeake going ahead for good on a three-point play with less than eight minutes to go.

Chesapeake held a slim 44-40 rebounding advantage, and turned 14 offensive boards into 21 second chance points. AACC's bench scored 26 points, led by McGriff's 13.

The Riverhawks return home Saturday to host Penn Highlands in a 3 pm Region XX game before taking on Butler County Sunday at 2 pm Sunday.
