              LARGO, Md - After defeating the Pioneers of Butler in convincing fashion on Saturday (2/23), and earning the opportunity to avenge an earlier regular season loss to Prince George's Community College, The Riverhawks men's basketball team would lose the Region XX, Division III Championship game Sunday (2/24), as the NJCAA DIII Region XX Owls of Prince George's Community College walked away with the 73-68 championship win and leave the Riverhawks as Division III Runner-up. On the road, the Riverhawks faced-off on the Owls home court in Largo, MD at the Prince George's Community College campus, host of this year's tournament. 

              A rough showing at the hoop during the first half would find the Riverhawks down 37-28 at intermission. Shooting just 8-30 from the floor, a dismal 1-11 from beyond the arc, and 11-16 at the free-throw line, AACC struggled to find their footing and build their momentum. 

              A more consistent and solid performance during the second half would show improvement for the Riverhawks. Showing the kind of heart the Riverhawks team have had all season, Anne Arundel opened the second half on a 14-2 run to grab a 42-39 edge four minutes into the final stanza. Improving to 5-9 from three-point land, and shooting 100% from the line, AACC would close the gap and then tie the game at 50 all.

             In front of a sold out home crowd, the two teams would then trade the lead a couple of times over the next four minutes before the Owls would go on a 16-9 run that put them in the lead and kept them there for the remainder of the game.

              Walter Tolliver (parole, MD/Annapolis) would lead Riverhawks scorers with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists, while Dayvon Cuffey (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) would finish with 16 points and 6 rebounds. Both players would also be named to the All-Tournament Team.

             With their 2nd place tournament finish, Anne Arundel will head to Sandhills Community College for the NJCAA District VII Championships in Pinehurst, N.C. on March 1-2. If the Riverhawks win two games to claim the district title, they will move onto the NJCAA Division III Men's Basketball Nationals Championships at the UCR Regional Sports Center in Rochester, Minn., on March 14-16.
