ANNANDALE, VA – Michael West scored a game-high 26 points, including the game-winning jumper in the remaining seconds, as Northern Virginia Community College defeated AACC, 80-78, in a Region 20 men's basketball matchup. The NJCAA Division II team improves to an overall record of 15-4 as the Riverhawks fall to 4-19.
West's eight footer capped an exciting final minute as the Riverhawks battle from behind was prospered when Jemeul Brown made a lay-up with 28 seconds left to tie it at 78.
Despite being down by 18 in the second half, AACC was able to go on a 15-0 scoring run to close the gap. Larry Steveson led for the Riverhawks with 22 points, Marcus Dentley followed with 20 points, and Jemeul Brown posted another double-double – scoring 12 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
Each team shot well from beyond the arc, AACC went 12-25 for three-pointers and the Nighthawks went 10-19.
This weekend, the Riverhawks travel once again to face Frederick Community College with tip-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
