BALTIMORE, Md. – The Anne Arundel Community College baseball team split a Region 20 divisional doubleheader with CCBC Essex Sunday in Baltimore. The Knights won the first game, 2-1, in eight innings before AACC cruised to a 4-0 nightcap victory.
Game One
Essex scored one run in the second and AACC tied it up on a Sam Ross double in the top of the seventh. AACC had runners on the corners in the top of the eighth, but a popped up bunt led to the runner at third getting thrown out on the attempted squeeze play.
After a quick ground out, wild pitching helped the Knights load the bases in the bottom of the inning, seeing the winning run come through on a single through the left.
AACC was limited to three hits in the game, coming from Ross, Russell Turner, and Camden Hodges. Ross stole a pair of bases in the game to bring his Region 20-leading season total to 33. Starting pitcher Jack Davidson struck out six and walked two allowing one run on five hits through six innings. Ross took the loss with one run on three walks and two hits in the final 1.1 innings.
Game Two
The Riverhawks allowed just two hits and five baserunners in the nightcap, scoring two runs in the second and third innings to get back in the win column. Nicco Holland allowed just one hit while striking out six and walking two through five innings of work. Reliever Matt Donaldson struck out three, walked one, and allowed just one hit in the final two innings.
AACC led off the second with back-to-back walks and loaded the bases on a Turner single to set up Travis Fleshman for an RBI single to right center. The next batter grounded into a double play, but the runner from third crossed the plate for the 2-0 lead.
In the third, a pair of walks and a balk put Riverhawks runners on second and third, both of whom came around to score when Griffin Klein reached on an infield error.
AACC is back in action on Wednesday, April 16, in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Division I Harford.
