
ARNOLD, Md. – The Anne Arundel Community College baseball team swept visiting Montgomery College Sunday afternoon in NJCAA Region 20 divisional action at Skip Brown Field. The Riverhawks walked off with a 3-2 win in eight innings in the opener, then held on to an early lead to win the nightcap, 8-3.
Camden Hodges went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored, also drawing four walks. Russell Turner drove in two runs, including the game-winner in game one.
Game One
Sam Ross led off the game with a double, and Evan Birch followed up with a single before both runner eventually crossed the plate via wild pitch.
Montgomery got a run back in the second on a sac fly, and didn't get a runner past second until the sixth. The Raptors tied it up in the seventh on back-to-back singles after a walk and a failed pickoff attempt.
AACC went down in order in the bottom of the seventh. Reliever Matt Donaldson struck out the first two Montgomery batters in the eighth and got the third batter on a flyout to left. The lefty earned the win to move to 3-1 on the season.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Hodges drew a walk and went to second on a Nicco Holland infield single. Turner hit the ball past the second baseman and Hodges sprinted home for the win.
Jack Davidson struck out four and allowed one run on four hits in a five-inning no decision. Ross allowed one unearned run in two innings of relief work, while striking out two, walking two, and giving up three hits.
Game Two
AACC scored four runs in the first and extended its lead to 6-0 in the second, while holding the Raptors hitless through three innings.
A pair of walks and a hit batter – one of four in the game – loaded the bases for back-to-back RBI singles from Hodges and Holland. The Raptors stopped the next attempt with a force out at the plate, but Travis Fleshman drew a bases loaded walk and Agustin Murillo kept the carousel running with a fielder's choice.
The Riverhawks added to the score in the second via wild pitch and a Turner sac fly.
An outfield error allowed a Montgomery run to score in the fourth, and the Raptors added two in the sixth on a home run over the centerfield fence.
Hodges led off the bottom of the sixth with a his second home run of the season, followed by a double from Holland. With the bases loaded, a wild pickoff throw from the catcher allowed the final Riverhawks' run to cross.
In his first career start, Kyle Smoak struck out one and walked one through two innings. Caden Houck threw four innings of relief, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits. Nicco Holland retired the Raptors in order in the seventh, securing the victory with a strikeout.
AACC is back in action on Friday, April 4, in a 1 p.m. divisional doubleheader at Cecil. The Riverhawks return home on Sunday, April 6, to host Chesapeake in a 12 p.m. divisional doubleheader at Skip Brown Field.
