Four From Baseball Named All-Region

Four members of the Anne Arundel Community College baseball team have earned All-Region 20 honors, it was announced Thursday. Sophomore second baseman John Greenawalt was named to the first team. Freshman outfielder/pitcher Sam Ross and freshman infielder/pitcher Nicco Holland were named to the second team. Sophomore utility player Alejandro Casanova earned a spot on the honorable mention team. The honors mark the first for all four players.

Greenawalt led the team, while ranking second in Region 20 and 12th nationally with a .450 batting average, having hit safely in 43 of 53 games this season. He opened the year on an 18-game hit streak and added a 12-game streak in the middle of the season. The lefty batter recorded 27 multi-hit games, and led Region 20 with 10 sacrifice bunts on the year – also good for sixth nationally. Greenawalt's .516 on base percentage led the team and ranked fourth in the Region. He drove in 34 runs this year, good for second on the team. The second baseman started all 53 games for the Riverhawks this season, turning a team-high 21 double plays. Greenawalt started 109 of 110 career games at AACC. And wraps up his two seasons with the Riverhawks boasting a .405 batting average and a .495 on base percentage to go with 139 hits and 59 RBI.

Ross started all 53 games in the outfield for the Riverhawks this season, while making 17 relief appearances on the mound. Ross made good use of his .406 on base percentage, stealing a Region 20-leading 48 bases in 52 attempts. His 48 stolen bases also ranked fourth nationally. Ross had nine multiple hit games this season, and coupled that with nine multi-steal games. On the mound, Ross earned a Region 20-best nine saves with a 2.48 ERA. The saves mark also ranked fourth in the NJCAA. Any ball hit to Ross in the outfield was virtually an automatic out, as the freshman made 97 putouts and assisted 13 in 116 chances.

Holland made 41 starts at first base and nine on the mound for the Riverhawks. He led the team in home runs (6), walks (41) and hit by pitch (13) with a .466 on base percentage. Holland drove in 33 runs on 35 hits this season. He was a part of 19 double plays and finished the year with a .979 fielding percentage. In 15 total appearances on the mound, Holland had a 4-3 record with a 5.00 ERA. He struck out 56 batters in 48 innings of work.

Casanova hit .320 this season for AACC and led the team in doubles with 11. He started 45 of 47 games this year, splitting time between the outfield, first base, and designated hitter. The lefty batter had 11 multi-hit performances and drove in 20 runs on 41 hits. Casanova concludes his two seasons with AACC with 69 hits, including 20 for extra bases, in 91 games.

AACC concluded the season with its second-straight trip to the double elimination round of the Region 20 Tournament under fourth-year head coach Nick Hoffner. The Riverhawks' 28-25 record marked the most wins in a season for AACC since 2012.
