Game Notes
The Riverhawk women's lacrosse team opened their season with a dominating, 20-1, win over the Catamounts of Potomac State College of WVU this past weekend (3/4), hosted at Anne Arundel Community College.
A pre-season complete with scrimmages on the road against NCAA DII/DIII opponents, the Riverhawks were eager to begin their season at home. Right out the gate, sophomore Sofia Michael (Crofton, MD/Arundel) would score just 14 seconds into play off an assist from newcomer Emily Kane (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Spalding). Kane would get her chance to score just seconds later as Yasemin Yazici (Gambrills, MD/Arundel) picked up a ground ball off the following draw control and found Kane to finish for the early 2-0 lead.
AACC would continue to dominate through the first half, scoring 6 unanswered points before the Catamounts were able to sneak one by Riverhawk starting goalkeeper Deanna Valerien (Gambrills, MD/North County). Not letting the lone goal affect their momentum, the Riverhawks finished the first half leading 14-1, winning 14-16 draw controls, successfully clearing 6-6, and outshooting their opponents 23-2.
Sophia Michael, Emily Kane, and Alyssa Baronella-O'Toole (Severn, MD/Old Mill) would each end the day with a hat trick while 7 other Riverhawks would score, contributing to the 20-1 final.
