ARNOLD, Md. – The No. 1 Anne Arundel Community College women's lacrosse team was upset by No. 2 Onondaga, 19-3, in an NJCAA clash at Siegert Field. The Riverhawks got goals from Cassidy Cook, Tinna Mavica, and Shelby Blanford.
AACC (2-1) scored the first goal less than two minutes into the game on a free position shot by Cook. Onondaga went on to score 15 consecutive goals, holding the Riverhawks scoreless until late into the third quarter.
Mavica ended the streak when she curled around the net to deposit her third goal of the season with 3:28 left in the third.
The Lazers (3-0) scored three more times before Blanford found the net with 6:23 remaining in the game. After an unsuccessful drive, AACC regrouped and Blanford drove from the top of the arc and slipped the ball in stick side.
AACC turned the ball over 13 times in the first half, but settled down in the second half, finishing with 21 turnovers. The Riverhawks forced seven of the Lazers' 18 turnovers, led by three caused turnovers from Lluvia Owens-Pabon.
OCC led in draw controls, 17-8, but the two teams were even in the second half. Ashlynn Deans paced AACC with four draw controls.
The Lazers outshot the Riverhawks at a 29-15 clip. AACC keeper Madi Spencer made six saves in the game. OCC also led in groundballs, 18-16, and was effective on the ride, holding AACC to a 10-14 clearing game.
The loss snaps a 12-game win streak for the defending national champions. AACC is back in action on Thursday, April 4, when the Riverhawks host No. 3 Monroe at 4 p.m.
