Softball Lands Four on All-MDJUCO Team

ARNOLD, MD – Four members of the Anne Arundel Community College softball team have been named All-Maryland JUCO, it was announced recently. Alyssa Smith and Jaclyn Nevins were named to the First Team. Courtney Maurer was named to the Second Team, and Kaleigh Hurd earned a spot on the Honorable Mention Team. All four student-athletes were previously named All-Region 20.

Smith, the March 2022 Region 20 DII Co-Player of the Month, started all 37 games at outfield for the Riverhawks. She led Region 20 in batting average, hitting .509, and ranked third in the Region with 56 hits including 25 for extra bases to drive in a team-high 37 runs. She was errorless in center field, making 63 putouts with six assists. On the basepath, Smith stole 19 of 20 bases – the second-highest tally in Region 20.   

Nevins, who was named the April 2022 Region 20 DII and MDJUCO Player of the Month, went 13-8 at pitcher with a pair of saves. She led the Region with 9.10 strikeouts per seven innings, totaling a Region-best 172 strikeouts on the year with a 3.76 ERA. Nevins fanned 13 in a perfect game against Christendom on April 3. In 20 starts, she threw 19 complete games including five shutouts. When Nevins wasn't in the circle, she started at short stop. She hit .303 on the season with 33 hits including 21 for extra bases and was successful in all 11 stolen base attempts on the year.

Maurer served as a catcher for the Riverhawks. She hit .377 on the season with 40 hits including 12 for extra bases. Maurer drove in 28 runs – good for second on the team. She struck out just six times in 106 at bats, and was successful in all six stolen base attempts. Behind the plate for 26 games, Maurer was charged with just one passed ball. In eight games in left field, Maurer made nine putouts and assisted another.

Hurd made 17 starts in the circle, going 8-6 with a 5.17 ERA. She pitched six complete games with a shutout at Montgomery. Hurd fanned 39 batters in 82.8 innings of work. Hurd also served the Riverhawks in left field and short stop, hitting .303 in 109 at bats with 18 RBI.

AACC finished the season with a 22-15 record, tallying the most wins since 2013. The Riverhawks went 16-7 at home and advanced to the double-elimination round of the Region 20 Tournament.
