Softball Earns First Win of Season, Splits With Frederick

ARNOLD, MD – The Anne Arundel Community College softball team picked up its first win of the season Friday, defeating visiting Frederick Community College, 7-4, in the first game of a doubleheader. In the nightcap, the Cougars dealt AACC an 11-0 loss in five innings.

Skylar Storm drove in two runs in the opener, and Kelsey Smith struck out five batters in her first win as a Riverhawk. She allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits through six innings. Jaclyn Nevins picked up a save with three quick outs in the seventh to preserve the win.

After giving up a run to the Cougars in the top of the first, AACC scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Riverhawks took advantage of an error and a pair of wild pitches in the inning, as well as RBI from Storm and Nevins to take the lead.

An RBI double gave Frederick another run in the top of the second. Heads up base running and patience at the plate paid dividends for the Riverhawks, who scored four runs in the bottom of the inning for a 7-2 lead.

A two-run double by the Cougars in the top of the seventh chased Smith out of the circle, giving way to Nevins, who closed out the game in the next three batters.

AACC was clicking defensively in the game en route to recording its best fielding percentage of the season (.966).

The Riverhawks struggled offensively in the nightcap, seeing just three hitters reach safely in the game. The Cougars tagged the AACC pitchers for 11 runs on 11 hits, including a grand slam as part of a six-run fifth inning.

Starter Rhiannon Claw took the loss for the Riverhawks, lasting two innings before giving way to Smith, who pitched 2.2 innings. Nevins again closed out the game, pitching the final out of the game.

Frederick pitcher Cierra Cook struck out five in her complete-game no-hitter.

AACC is back in action on Sunday in a 12 pm non-conference doubleheader against Delaware Tech.
