Softball Comeback at Catonsville Halted by Darkness

CATONSVILLE, MD – The Anne Arundel Community College softball team faced CCBC Catonsville in an MDJUCO twinbill Thursday afternoon. The Riverhawks dropped the first game, 9-1, before settling for a 10-10 tie in the nightcap that was called after seven innings due to darkness.

"We had an exciting second game," said Head Coach Guy Klingensmith. "The entire team contributed in some aspect and I believe we opened their eyes by being competitive and not giving up."

Freshman third baseman Hannah Davis drove in the Riverhawks' lone run in the opening game with an RBI double in the sixth. She followed with her first career grand slam as part of a two-hit, five RBI performance in the second game.

AACC took an early lead in the second game on Davis's RBI single in the first, followed by an RBI single from Sylvia Frye in the next at-bat. Catonsville responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning on three hits.

Davis's grand slam in the second put the Riverhawks ahead, 6-4, before Catonsville got one back in the third on a sac fly. AACC went in order in the third and fourth innings while allowing Catonsville to retake the lead with two runs in each frame.

But in the fifth inning, Kyleigh McQuade led off with a double before Carly Gernert drove in a run on a ground out and Gracie Culley plated another in the next at-bat. In the sixth, McQuade hit her first home run of the season, a two-run shot, to put the Riverhawks ahead, 10-9.

Catonsville tied it up with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth and Culley got the Riverhawks out of a jam with two runners on in the bottom of the seventh with her seventh strikeout of the game to preserve the tie.

Culley pitched four innings of relief in the second game, allowing three runs on three hits with six walks and seven strikeouts. Veronica Hampton started the game, giving up three runs on two hits. Davis allowed four runs on four hitas with three walks in three innings. Culley shouldered the loss in the first game with 14 hits and four strikeouts in the full game effort.
