AACC named Duane P. Herr, a former scholar-athlete on both AACC’s and Towson’s baseball teams, as the Director of Athletics in June, 2014.

During his first year at the helm, Herr led the hosting of the Women's Lacrosse National Tournament on Anne Arundel's Arnold campus. Since the first tournament in 2015, AACC has hosted the women's lacrosse national tournament two additional times. In 2015, he assisted in the coordination of a major branding and engagement intiative within the institution, transitioning AACC's mascot from the "Pioneers" to the "Riverhawks".  In the fall of that year, with academics at the focus, the athletic department launched the Athletic Director Honor Roll which acknowledges student-athletes that earn grade point averages of 3.0 or higher during their term of participation. Herr leads on the foundations of professionalism and sportsmanship as platforms to success in college and beyond.

“Participation in athletics builds skill sets transferrable to life after college,” Herr says. “Anne Arundel offers extensive services to support the success of our students, and my job is to direct our student-athletes to those services while supporting new initiatives.”

To better direct student-athletes to support services, Herr led in the creation of the college's first student-athlete success position, Coordinator of Student-Athlete Success. This position is focused on academic success and holistic development of AACC's student-athletes. Most recently, to further support the holistic development and well-being of student-athletes, Herr helped develop the position of Associate Athletic Trainer, Strength and Conditioning Coach.

While at AACC as a student, he earned the John Laycock Award as well as Region and Conference Honors. He transferred to Towson University where he played baseball as a two-year scholarship athlete and earned an academic scholarship. Herr earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management with a minor in business administration. He interned in the AACC Athletics office during his last term at Towson and was hired as a temporary employee upon graduating cum laude in 2010, becoming an assistant within the athletic department in November 2010.

Herr currently serves as the Region 20 Men's Assistant Director and is also the Region 20 Ambassador for the National Junior College Athletic Associations Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council.

Herr resides in Annapolis with his wife and three children.
