Softball Splits With Catonsville

CATONSVILLE, MD. – The Anne Arundel Community College softball team split a doubleheader at CCBC Catonsville Wednesday. The Riverhawks came from behind to win the first game, 3-2, but their rally fell short in game two, a 7-5 loss.

Jaclyn Nevins struck out eight from the circle in the first game and hit for the cycle over the pair of games, going 4-for-6 on the day with a triple and home run in the second game.

Game one was a pitcher's duel through the first four innings before the host Cardinals scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a triple and a sac fly.

AACC left runners in scoring position in the sixth, but pushed three runs across in the seventh to take the lead.

Kendall Thomas led off the inning with a single, and after one out Nevins doubled to center, sending pinch runner Laney Phipps to third. Then with two outs, Jaden Buchanan hit the ball through the right side to score both runners. Next, Ryann Brooks reached third as her hit to Cardinals third baseman was hurled over first base, seeing Buchanan score on a speedy advance all the way from first.

In game two, AACC erased a four-run deficit with five runs in the fifth, but gave up three in the sixth before going down in order in the seventh.

Catonsville scored two each in the second and third innings before the Riverhawks scored five in the fifth on a two-out rally capped by Nevins's two-run home run.

Kaleigh Hurd allowed four runs on 10 hits in the first four innings. Kendall Thomas shouldered the loss with three runs on four hits in the final two innings.

AACC now waits for the NJCAA Region 20 tournament seeding to come out to determine the Riverhawks' next opponent. The first round of the tournament is a best-of-three series May 6-7, at the higher seeded team's site. The four winners of the first round will play a double-elimination tournament at CCBC Catonsville the following weekend.
