Softball Opens Season at Delaware Tech

GEORGETOWN, DEL. – The Anne Arundel Community College opened the season with a doubleheader at Delaware Tech Monday afternoon. The teams tied the first game, 8-8, in eight innings, and in the nightcap Delaware Tech defeated the Riverhawks, 10-1, in five innings.

The Riverhawks collected 20 hits on the day, led by Alyssa Smith , who went 4-for-6 at the plate with two doubles and stole a pair of bases on the day. Kendall Thomas went 3-for-4 in her collegiate debut. Ryann Brooks drove in three runs on the day.

Jaclyn Nevins pitched a complete game in the opener, allowing eight runs on 13 hits while striking out three and walking two. Kaleigh Hurd started game two, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits in three innings before giving way to Thomas, who surrendered the final four runs on four hits and a walk.

AACC scored a single run in the second inning and Delaware Tech tied it up in the third on a sac fly. The Riverhawks responded with three runs in the fifth on four hits. Thomas led off the inning with a double before Courtney Croson and Brooks hit back-to-back singles. Croson scored on a passed ball, and after a groundout, Courtney Maurer drive in the final run of the inning with a single up the middle.

Delaware Tech cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning with a one-run double, but AACC responded in the sixth as Brooks sent two across with a single to make it 6-2 in favor of the Riverhawks.

In the bottom half of the inning, Delaware Tech etched away at AACC's lead with another two-run double, before sending the game to extra innings with two runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh.

In the eighth with runners on second and third, Brooks drove the go-ahead run with a groundout, and Kaleigh Hurd plated the second run on an infield single.

It was not over for the Roadrunners, however, as Kaniah James hit a two-run homerun over the centerfield fence to force the tie.

In the second game, Delaware Tech tagged the Riverhawks for three home runs amongst 11 hits, scoring four runs in the first and fourth innings. AACC's lone run came in the fourth as Makayla Blake drove in Smith with an infield single.

AACC hosts Howard Community College in the Riverhawks' home opener on Wednesday, March 8. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
