ARNOLD, MD – The Anne Arundel Community College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Niagara County Sunday, winning the first game, 10-2 in six innings, before falling in the second, 8-4. Game one pitcher Jaclyn Nevins was one hit shy of the cycle in the game, and earned the win on the mound with six strikeouts and two hits allowed.

Alyssa Smith hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first to tie the game, and the Riverhawks added three runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings to walk off with the win. In the third, Nevins hit an RBI double to right center, and Courtney Maurer drove in two runs with a single up the middle. In the fourth, the Riverhawks scored their runs on five hits, including RBI singles from Nevins, and Smith, as well as a sac fly from Kaleigh Hurd.

In the sixth, Courtney Croson and Hurd started the inning with singles, with Croson coming across to score as Smith reached on an error. Nevins hit an RBI triple, and Maurer sent Nevins across with a sac fly to left to reach the eight-run margin.

Errors plagued the Riverhawks throughout the day, with both NCCC runs in game one coming after misplays.

Niagara took a two-run lead in the third of game two, but AACC responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning on four hits to take the lead.

It was short-lived, however, as the Thunder Wolves came back to score at least one run in each of the remaining innings.

A Smith RBI double in the fifth brought AACC to within one, but NCCC stranded a runner at third to end the threat. Hurd was the only baserunner the rest of the way with a single in the seventh.

Hurd took the loss with seven runs (five earned) on nine hits through 5.1 innings. Nevins closed out the game with one run on three hits and a pair of strikeouts.

On the day, AACC went 7-for-8 in stolen bases, grabbing three in game one and four in game two.

AACC is back in action Wednesday, March 30, in a 3 pm doubleheader at Potomac State.
