Softball Splits With No. 9 Brookdale

ARNOLD, MD – The Anne Arundel Community College softball team split a doubleheader with visiting Brookdale Community College Wednesday afternoon at the AACC Softball Field. The Riverhawks won the first game, 9-4, before dropping the second, 10-1 in six innings. Brookdale came into the game ranked ninth in the nation among NJCAA Division III teams.

Jaclyn Nevins earned the complete game win in the opener, striking out nine while allowing four runs on eight hits. At the player, Nevins hit a home run and two doubles, driving in three runs on a 4-for-6 day at the plate.

Alyssa Smith also went 4-for-6 with a double and stole a pair of bases. She made her first career appearance in the circle in game two, coming on in relief in the fifth inning.

AACC also got home runs in game one from Makayla Ruleman, a three-run shot in the fourth inning, and a two-run homer from Sierra Fowler in the fifth inning.

Nevins' two-run home run came with two outs in the first inning. Brookdale answered with single runs in the second and fourth innings to tie the game. Ruleman hit the ball over the center field fence in the bottom of the fourth to give AACC back the lead.

Fowler's two-run home run to left center edged AACC ahead, 7-2, in the fifth, and Skylar Storm drove in an insurance run later in the inning.

Brookdale got two more on the board with two outs in the top of the sixth on a pair of hits, but Nevins induced an infield groundout to end the game.

In game two, Brookdale scored in every inning, scoring 10 runs on 10 hits. The Jersey Blues started with a leadoff home run to center in the first.

AACC's lone run came on a Courtney Maurer single in the bottom of the first. AACC tried to get a second run across, but the runner was thrown out at home.

Kaleigh Hurd had the game two start in the circle for the Riverhawks. She allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and walked one through four innings. Smith surrendered five runs (four earned) and walked five in the final two innings.

AACC hosts Delaware Tech Saturday, March 19, in a 12 pm doubleheader.
