ARNOLD, MD – The Anne Arundel Community College softball team hosted Chesapeake College in the Riverhawks' home opener Friday, falling to the Skipjacks, 16-11, in the first game of the doubleheader, and trailing, 8-6, in the second that was suspended in the top of the fifth due to darkness.

AACC (1-2, 0-1) led, 4-0, after three in the first game, but Chesapeake used a pair of home runs in the top of the fourth to score six and take the lead. The Skipjacks added two in the fifth on a solo home run and an RBI double, and a single run in the sixth to lead, 9-4, headed into the final frame.

Chesapeake took advantage of three Riverhawks errors to erupt for seven runs in the seventh on five hits, including the second home run of the day for Shyra Jones.

AACC answered back in the bottom of the frame with seven runs on seven hits, including back-to-back home runs from Sierra Fowler and Courtney Maurer, but the rally fell just short.

Jaclyn Nevins went the distance for the Riverhawks, allowing 16 runs (15 earned) on 17 hits, while fanning five and walking four.

In game two, AACC led, 4-2 after three, but the Skipjacks scored six runs on six hits in the fourth to take the lead, 8-4.

Heads up baserunning by the Riverhawks in the bottom of the fourth saw two runs score to bring the Riverhawks within two as dusk fell.

Kaleigh Hurd had the start in the circle for AACC, allowing seven runs on eight hits with one strikeout in 3.2 innings before Nevins came in to get AACC out of the fourth.

The teams started the fifth and Chesapeake got two runners on before the game was suspended due to darkness. The teams plan to complete the game when AACC travels to Chesapeake on Wednesday, April 13.
