Big Second Half Sends Women's Soccer to Region 20 Semis

ARNOLD, MD. – The fourth seed Anne Arundel Community College women's soccer team scored five goals in the final 22 minutes of the game to defeat fifth seed Howard Community College, 6-1, in the NJCAA Region 20 Division II Women's Soccer Tournament at Siegert Field Saturday. Makenzie Boyd recorded a natural hat trick to lead the Riverhawks.

Tadem Augustin finished a cross from Jaylin Sheffield in the 8th minute to put AACC on the board. The Riverhawks never trailed in the game, but did allow the Dragons to tie it up in the 69th minute. Kimberly Ruano tapped the ball just past Riverhawks' keeper McKenzie Lanham on a slow roller toward the cage before carrying to the far side to find the back of the undefended net.

Boyd scored the game-winner in the 73rd minute with a ball that clanged off the crossbar and off of Dragons' keeper Olivia Jackson for the Riverhawks' second goal of the game. Boyd made it 3-1 in the 78th minute, completing a give-and-go from Mia Hull. She completed the hat trick just over 90 seconds later, one-timing a tap-ahead from Sheffield.

Sheffield added a goal of her own in the 85th minute. She carried the ball up the sideline from midfield past three Howard defenders before scoring inside the far post.

Ally Lavery capped the scoring in the waning seconds of the game, outmaneuvering a Howard defender before sending the ball ricocheting off the Dragons' keeper.

Lanham made one stop in net for the Riverhawks. Jackson made eight saves for Howard.

AACC outshot Howard, 22-4, overall, and held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Riverhawks (3-5-3) face top-seeded Potomac State at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25th in the Region 20 semifinals at Howard Community College. The winner of that game will advance to the championship game at Howard on Saturday, October 28th at noon.
