Women's Soccer Drops NJCAA Opener to Top Seed Brookhaven

HERKIMER, N.Y. – The eighth-seeded Anne Arundel Community College women's soccer team fell to top seed Brookhaven, 4-0, in the opening round of the NJCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships Wednesday.

AACC keeper Kaitlin Kenney made a huge diving save just two minutes into the game which set the tone for the remainder of the half. The Lady Bears finally solved the keeper in the 42nd minute, as Brooke Bailey Clarke headed in a high corner from Natalie Lopez. Kenney finished the half with five stops and made a season-high 12 saves in the game.

Brookhaven (14-0-1) kept up the pressure in the second half, scoring a pair of goals just 30 seconds apart in the 52nd minute. After a pair of failed corner attempts, Lopez connected on a long laser to make it 2-0. Alexa Bezpalko then one-touched in a rebound off Kenney's diving stop of Aliyaha Obregon's initial shot for a 3-0 lead on the next possession.

The Lady Bears extended their lead in the 80th minute with a one-touch volley by Brook Meah Perez off a pass from Stephanie Farian.

AACC's best opportunity came in the 81st minute when Cassidy Smith was awarded a free kick above the top corner of the box. Smith sent in a loft, but the AACC offense was unable to get open to finish.

The Riverhawks defense was key in the game as the back line Asylin Weseman, Aiyanna Pullins, Ally Hall, and Taylor Stahl were kept busy the entire 90 minutes.

AACC (5-8) will face either Genesee Community College or Ocean County Community College in the consolation round at noon on Thursday, November 10, at Herkimer College.
