Women's Soccer Comeback Falls Short Against Potomac State

ARNOLD, MD – The Anne Arundel Community College women's soccer team scored three second-half goals to tie the game against visiting Potomac State Sunday afternoon, but fell to the Catamounts, 5-4, in overtime of the NJCAA Region 20 game at Siegert Field.

The Riverhawks scored three goals in a 10-minute span in the second half, sparked by back-to-back goals from Ella Simpson in the 78th and 80th minutes. The first saw Simpson unopposed as she collected a long pass ahead from Aslyn Weseman. Simpson next scored from the far post off a corner kick from Cassidy Smith. Smith then took matters into her own hands, sending in a lofty direct kick from about 20 yards out in the 88th minute to tie the game at 4-4.

Riverhawks' keeper Kaitlyn Kenney couldn't control a cross from Nicole McManamay in the 95th minute, seeing the ball trickle into the net by an open Morgan Pyles for the win.

Potomac State scored a pair of flukey goals in the first six minutes of the game, only to see Macey McPherson finish a cross from Aiyanna Pullins in the 10th minute to make it 3-1 in favor of the Catamounts.

Kenney finished the game with six saves as the Riverhawks outshot their visitors at a 22-18 clip. AACC held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks in the game.

The Riverhawks travel to Hagerstown on Tuesday, October 11, to face the Division II Hawks at 4 p.m.
