Road Runners Rally Past Women's Basketball

ARNOLD, Md. – The Anne Arundel Community College women's basketball team played a tremendous second half, but fell short to visiting Rowan College South Jersey – Gloucester, 61-48, Tuesday evening in Jenkins Gym.

Ayannah Gorham had a double-double for the Riverhawks (3-16) with 12 points and 12 rebounds, also adding a pair of steals and three blocks. Holly Wall pulled down 10 rebounds and had five steals to go with five points. Jaymee Green had four steals and a block to go with four points off the bench.

As a team, AACC had 16 steals, and converted 31 Rowan turnovers into 18 points. The Road Runners (18-2) led the rebounding battle, 54-48, however the Riverhawks had 24 offensive boards, leading to 14 second-chance points.

AACC started the game on a 6-0 run, thanks in part to Rowan turning the ball over on its first four possessions. The Road Runners chipped away at the lead, tying the game on the back end of a pair of free throws at the 4:51 mark. Rowan closed the quarter on a 9-2 run.

After a three-and-a-half minute scoring drought for both teams in the second quarter, Rowan went up by 10 on a three-pointer at the 5:55 mark. AACC pulled within single digits late in the quarter, but headed to the locker room down, 29-18.

The Riverhawks again cut the Road Runners' lead to single digits four times in the third, getting as close as a three-point margin on a Green put back with less than a minute to play in the frame.

Trailing by four headed into the fourth quarter, AACC saw Rowan use an 8-2 run to build back to a double-digit lead. Bianca Garin hit a three-pointer to cut the Road Runners' lead to seven, but Rowan started to pull away late to claim its 18th win in a row.

Prior to the game, AACC recognized its three sophomores for their contributions to the women's basketball program: Garin, Leila Townsend, and SeRi Miles. AACC is back in action on Saturday, February 17, in a 1 p.m. game at Allegany College of Maryland.
