Butler Tops Women's Basketball in Region Tourney

YOUNGWOOD, PA – The third seeded Anne Arundel Community College women's basketball team fell to second seeded Butler County Community College, 70-43, in the NJCAA Region 20 Division III Tournament semifinals Saturday at Westmoreland County Community College. All-Tournament team selection Leila Townsend led the Riverhawks with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Syrena Boone added five points and 14 rebounds (11 defensive), while Isabella Papaleonti and Ruth Marshall each added seven points.

The first quarter was a defensive battle as both teams struggled to find the basket. Butler opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run and outscored the Riverhawks by 13 points in the frame to carry a 26-13 lead into halftime.

Townsend scored seven of her total points in just six minutes on the floor in the third quarter hitting three of four from the floor and one of two from three-point range. AACC kept pace in the stanza, but couldn't make up for lost ground.

Butler exploded for 26 points in the fourth quarter, shooting 50% from the floor in the period.

The Pioneers outrebounded AACC at a 47-41 margin, holding a 37-29 advantage off the defensive glass. The Riverhawks' bench outscored that of Butler, 13-10.

AACC finishes the season with an 8-17 overall record.
