Women's Basketball Falls to Butler in Region 20 Semis

ARNOLD, MD – The third seed Anne Arundel Community College women's basketball fell to second seed Butler County Community College, 68-59, in the NJCAA Region 20 Division III semifinals at Jenkins Gym Saturday afternoon. The Riverhawks were led by 19 points from sophomore guard Sydney Woodland.

Woodland added 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Syrena Boone added her 10th double-double of the year with 16 points and 12 boards. Brandy Middleton joined the duo in double-digit scoring with 12 points.

Butler County's Aslyn Pry led all scorers with 23 points to go with 31 rebounds. Hailey Metzger added 21 points for the Pioneers (10-7).

The game featured 11 lead changes and nine ties, seeing AAC take its first lead early in the second quarter, 14-13, after a pair of Woodland free throws. The teams battled it out, with AACC using a 7-0 run to gain a 22-20 lead midway through the second, but the lead changed two more times before the half. A late three-pointer from Jada Turner gave the Riverhawks a 29-27 lead headed into halftime.

Butler outscored AACC, 24-19, in the third quarter, but the Riverhawks chipped away to retake the lead on a Middleton jumper with less than five minutes to play in the game. A Boone free throw gave the Riverhawks a three-point advantage, but a Butler three pointer on the next possession sparked the Pioneers' offense as they hit three consecutive three-pointers to regain control. Butler held AACC scoreless over the final 4:18 to seal the deal.

Butler held a 53-41 rebounding advantage, but AACC generated 16 points off of Butler's 17 turnovers

Butler will face top seed Prince George's in the NJCAA Region 20 Championship Sunday at 12 pm in Jenkins Gym. Tickets for the game will be available at the door: $5 adults, $3 students with ID, and free for kids age 12 and under.
