Women's Basketball Drops OT Thriller to Christendom

ARNOLD, MD – The Anne Arundel Community College women's basketball team faced off with visiting USCAA Division II Christendom College Monday evening at Jenkins Gym. The Crusaders scored with one second remaining in overtime to defeat the Riverhawks, 64-62.

Syrena Boone recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while filling the box score with three assists, two steals, and a pair of blocks. Sydney Woodland added 18 points, six rebounds and five steals. Brandy Middleton chipped in with 13 points, five assists and five steals, while Jada Turner score 12 points on 4-for-9 shooting from beyond the arc.

AACC led, 18-14 after the first quarter and used a 10-2 run to build up an 11-point lead midway through the second. Christendom scored the first six points in the third quarter and got as close as two points to the Riverhawks before AACC pulled away to maintain a five point lead at the horn.

Midway through the fourth a Boone three-pointer put the Riverhawks up by eight, but after a 30-second time out, the Crusaders regrouped for a 10-0 run over the next four-and-a-half minutes to retake the lead by two, 58-56, with 1:01 to play in regulation.

Woodland swished a pair of free throws with 49 seconds left to tie the game. A Turner steal with 29 seconds left gave AACC the ball at midcourt, but the Riverhawks were unable to generate a basket from it. Neither was Christendom after a 30-second time out and the teams headed to overtime.

AACC netted the first three points of the extra session, capped by a put back by Naomi Ray at the 2:37 mark. Back-to-back jumpers by the Crusaders put the visitors back in the lead with 1:11 left to play. Middleton sank the second of two free throws with seven seconds left to tie it up at 62-all.

Christendom advanced the ball after Middleton's swish, inbounding just in front of their bench to Catherine Thomas at the top of the key, where she hit a jumper with one second left to give the Crusaders the lead, 64-62. AACC's ensuing inbound from under the hoop was intercepted as time expired to seal the win.

The Riverhawks defense held Christendom to 1-of-7 shooting from three-point range in the game, but the Crusaders dominated the paint at a 32-16 clip. AACC generated 28 points of of 30 Christendom turnovers, while recording a season-high 18 steals. 

AACC continues its homestand with a 5 pm game against Hagerstown on Wednesday, January 26.
