Game Notes

The Riverhawks dropped, 73-63, to conference (MD JUCO) opponent Allegany College of Maryland last night (1/24), hosted in the Jenkins Gymnasium at Anne Arundel Community College.

AACC let this one slip away as they seemingly controlled the pace of the game for the majority of the MD JUCO action. After the first quarter, the Riverhawks had a lead of 19-14 over the Trojans, and then continued with their persistent offense to hold the lead at the half, 39-35.

The Trojans had kept the Riverhawks in their view and with their patient presence on the court; Allegany was able to shut down the Riverhawk offense – holding them to just ten points in the third quarter. Daja Burnett (Arnold,MD/ Severna Park) and Hannah Lieb (Annapolis, MD) finished the first half with 13 points and 9 points (respectively) but had been held to 0 points and 1 point in the 3rd quarter. With a string of missed buckets paired with the steady scoring of the Trojans (18 points), the Riverhawks had lost their lead and now found themselves down four points with just the last remaining quarter to play.

The fourth quarter gave a brief moment of momentum for the Riverhawks, despite the Trojans building the lead to seven, AACC would capitalize on a fast break by Burnett to cut their deficit to five. Hoping to spark the offense and take back control, AACC was relentless in their efforts.

Cailin Jones (Annapolis, MD/Bowie) finished with a career high 18 rebounds and 8 points for the Riverhawks, and Daja Burnett finished with a double-double, her 3rd of the season, with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Lieb finished with 14 points and 8 rebounds on the night, and Marcelaine Augustin (Lowell, MA/Riverdale Baptist) finished with 9 points and 10 rebounds on the night.

Struggles in the second half proved too much for AACC to overcome, ultimately losing by 10, (73-63) to the Trojans from Allegany College of Maryland.

Up Next

Winding down with regular season action, the Riverhawks will need to turn things around if they hope to ensure post-season play. Next up will be a tough match-up against the 17-2 (9-0 within the conference) Fighting Owls of Harford Community College this Friday night (1/26). Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm in the Jenkins Gymnasium at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, MD.
