Second Half Surge Leads Carroll Past Men's Soccer

WESTMINSTER, MD. – The Carroll Community College men's soccer team scored twice in the second half as the Lynx topped the visiting Anne Arundel Community College Riverhawks, 2-0, in NJCAA Region 20 action Tuesday afternoon.

An AACC foul deep in the corner set up a free kick for the Lynx in the 73rd minute. The kick was cleared from in front, but Evan Austin one-timed the loose ball into the upper 90 for a 1-0 lead.

Carroll added to its lead in the 80th minute as Zach Gaegler eluded several defenders before slipping the ball low past a diving Jayeim Blake.

It looked as if Carroll had taken the lead in the ninth minute. Blake made a diving save on a direct kick awarded just outside the box, but the rebound ricocheted back out in front. A Carroll player kicked the ball into the upper 90, but he was whistled offside.

AACC had a great run in the 33rd minute, passing the ball all the way up the field, but the final shot from outside sailed just wide of the net.

On the next possession, the Riverhawks move the ball back up the opposite side before benefitting from free kick due to a Carroll foul about 35 yards out. An AACC forward lined up just offside, negating the Riverhawks' attempt on goal.

AACC had four shots on goal in the second half amid several scoring opportunities. Back-to-back corners in the 57th minute didn't generate any shots on goal, but the AACC offense kept on the pressure and peppered the Lynx' keeper.

A melee in the 86th minute forced the game to end early as five red cards among the two teams were issued along with several ejections.

Blake finished the game with two saves, while AACC as a whole outshot Carroll, 15-12 (6-4 on net).

AACC is idle until Saturday, September 30, when the Riverhawks travel to Frederick for an 11 a.m. Region 20 game.
