Men's Lax Rallies For Win at Herkimer to Split Upstate Road Trip

HERKIMER, N.Y. – The Anne Arundel Community College men's lacrosse team rallied for a 12-11 victory at Herkimer Saturday to salvage an Upstate New York weekend road trip split. The Riverhawks fell at Genesee Friday, 32-8.

Sam Barrett scored with 2:26 remaining against Herkimer to halt the Generals' comeback bid. AACC's defense held Herkimer to just one shot on goal over the final minute of the game, which was easily handled by keeper Parrish Fleming. Fleming finished the game with 17 saves.

Herkimer scored the first goal of the game before AACC (3-1) went on an eight-goal run spanning the first and second quarters. The Generals potted one more before the half to see the Riverhawks leading, 8-2, at halftime.

But the Generals came out firing after the break, scoring four in a row to cut the Riverhawks' lead to two, 8-6. Barrett scored off a Justin Sampson feed to snap the streak before Herkimer scored twice more to get within one.

John McElhenny scored an unassisted goal with 2:56 remaining in the quarter to push the Riverhawks' lead back up to two, 10-8. McElhenny finished the day with four goals and two assists.

The teams traded goals in the early parts of the final frame before Herkimer's Ian Weir scored back-to-back goals to tie up the game with 10:04 left to play.

A penalty on AACC's keeper with 6:16 left in the frame sent Rocco Gargano in net, who came up with a crucial save in his 1:09 in the cage.

At the faceoff x, Trevor Murray went 16-for-24 with 10 groundballs.

The day before was a completely different story as the Cougars opened the game on a 12-0 run before Tyler Silvestri snapped the streak at 11:42 of the second. McElhenny scored two goals and assisted another. Silvestri and Logan Wheeler finished the day with two goals each, and Barrett scored two and assisted three others.

Fleming made 20 stops in net, and Murray won eight of 23 faceoffs.

The Riverhawks travel to Howard Community College Wednesday, March 13, for a 4 p.m. non-region game against the Dragons.
