Golf Fifth at District Tournament

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Anne Arundel Community College golf team competed at the NJCAA Division II Southeast District Championships early this week, finishing fifth out of nine teams. Sophomore Ryan Brophy placed eighth on the individual leaderboard to earn All-District honors and an invitation to the 2024 NJCAA Division II National Championship, May 21-24, in Joplin, Mo.

The teams played both the first and second rounds on Monday, April 22, at the par 71 Golf Club of Bristol. Brophy was six over after the first round, but finished the second at his collegiate best two-under. He followed that up the next day with another two-under round to finish +2 for the tournament. Brophy had 16 birdies in the 54-hole tournament – the most of any golfer in the 46-player field.

The Riverhawks were tied for fifth place after the first round, and maintained that position throughout. Roane State CC won the team title at a combined five under.

Tim Brophy finished in 21st place with a consistent score of 76 in each round. Darren Hoffman moved up three places on the leaderboard to 29th in the third round. He chipped in for birdie on the 18th to complete his best collegiate round at 73 (+3). Hoffman opened play with an 81 and shot an 87 in the second round.

Jameson Haynes finished in 34th place after an 83 in the first round, followed by an 86 and an 85. Sam Thompson scored in the first and third rounds, shooting a 91 in the first and an 88 in the third. Ethan Baran scored in the second round with an 86.

The trip to nationals will mark the second for Brophy, who previously competed at the NJCAA National Championships in 2018 when AACC was competing at the Division III level. He finished tied for 24th at the four-round tournament at Chatauqua Golf Club in Chatauqua, N.Y.
