Golf Finishes First at Southern Maryland

ISSUE, Md. – The Anne Arundel Community College golf team opened the season placing first in a Region 20 match held at Swan Point Yacht and Country Club Thursday, March 21. The Riverhawks finished three strokes ahead of host College of Southern Maryland.

AACC had three of the top five finishers, led by sophomore Ryan Brophy, who finished first on the leaderboard with an 83 after the teams battled cold and windy conditions throughout the round. Brophy carded a pair of birdies on the back nine after trailing by one through nine holes. He was the only golfer in the field who birdied the par-3 12th hole.

Freshman Timothy Brophy finished tied for third with an 86. He was also one stroke back at the turn with remarkably consistent play given the tough weather conditions. Freshman Jameson Haynes was AACC's third scoring golfer with a 94. Darren Hoffman rounded out the scoring with a 99, cutting one stroke off his front nine score on the back. Ethan Baran shot a 102 with birdies on the eighth and 17th holes.

AACC had three additional golfers competing, led by freshman Sam Thompson, who finished in fifth overall with a 91. He scored par on four holes on the front nine and again on the 18th to card a 91. Freshman Ela Simpson, the only woman in the field, finished with a 99, scoring par on three holes. Freshman Jonathan Fletcher regrouped at the turn to shoot par on the first three holes on the back, finishing with a 102.

AACC is back in action on Tuesday, April 2, in a home match, the South River Shootout, hosted at the Golf Club at South River. The Riverhawks have a quick turnaround and travel to the Spring Carroll Classic at Oakmont Green.
