Baseball Sweeps Cecil in Region Doubleheader

NORTH EAST, Md. – The Anne Arundel Community College baseball team swept host Cecil, 5-2 and 9-1, Sunday in NJCAA Region 20 Division II action. Evan Pohlman went 3-for-6 on the day with three runs scored and also struck out 11 Cecil batters in the game one start.

Game One

AACC scored three runs in the seventh to break open what had been a tie game since the fourth. Two runs came across on an Alejandro Casanova double, and the third came across on an infield error.

Cecil took advantage of an error to score a single run in the first. AACC scored two in the fourth to retake the lead on a Pohlman sac fly and an RBI single from Agustin Murillo. A Cecil sac fly in the fourth tied the game at 2-2.

Sam Ross earned the game one win with two innings of relief, striking out three while not allowing a hit. Pohlman fanned 11 and walked four while allowing two unearned runs on four hits through five innings.

Game Two

AACC scored five runs on just one hit in the first and never looked back in the second game win.

The Riverhawks benefitted from an error, a bases-loaded walk, and several wild pitches to earn the advantage. Pohlman collected the lone hit of the inning, an RBI single to center. Donny White closed out the scoring as he stole home.

A bases loaded walk and a wild pitch sent two more AACC runs across in the fourth. Ross collected the lone hit of the inning, a single to center.

Cecil scored its run on a sac fly with runners on second and third. The next batter walked to set up runners on the corners, but John Greenawalt snagged a pop up to end the threat.

The Riverhawks tacked on two more runs in the sixth courtesy of a Pohlman single and a bases loaded walk drawn by Griffin Klein – all with two outs.

Jack Davidson earned the win on the mount with two strikeouts and one hit. Caden Houck, Jordan Bonhoff, Zach Ford, and Kyle Smoak were all effective in brief relief appearances, with the staff combining to allow just four hits.

AACC returns home on Thursday, April 18, for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Bucks County. The Riverhawks also host Chesapeake Saturday, April 20, in a 12 p.m. NJCAA Region 20 Division II doubleheader.
