No. 12 Frederick Sweeps Baseball

FREDERICK, Md. – The Anne Arundel Community College baseball team fell to host No. 12 Frederick in an NJCAA Region 20 divisional doubleheader Saturday. The Riverhawks scored nine runs across the final two innings in a 13-11 loss in game one and managed three hits in a 10-0 loss in five innings in the nightcap.

Game One

Russell Turner, Sebastian Casanova, and Ryan Jordan each drove in two runs for the Riverhawks in the first game.

Turner got things going in the first inning, sending two runs across when he reached on an infield error with two outs. Frederick responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on two hits.

The Cougars took the lead for good in the second inning with five runs on four hits. Kyle Smoak came on in relief and AACC caught a Frederick runner stealing to end the inning.

Back-to-back doubles and a sac fly sent four FCC players across the plate in the fourth to extend the Cougars' lead to seven, 11-2.

After three-straight singles to lead off the sixth, AACC sent one run across via wild pitch, and scored two more on RBI groundouts from Blake Nawab and Sebastian Casanova. Frederick got those runs back in the bottom of the inning sending the teams to the seventh with FCC leading, 13-5.

Sam Ross and John Greenawalt led off the seventh with singles, and AACC loaded the bases when Nicco Holland drew a walk setting up Alejandro Casanova for an RBI single. The runners then all advanced one on a wild pitch, cutting FCC's lead to 11-7.

With two outs, a bases loaded hit by pitch sent one across for the Riverhawks and Jordan hit a two-run single to make it 13-10 Frederick. The Riverhawks loaded the bases again, seeing a run come across via passed ball, but left two on as the final batter flew out to right.

Starter Donny White took the loss with seven runs on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 1.2 innings. Smoak walked three and gave up four runs on four hits in two innings before giving way to Rodolfo Llobet, who struck out one while, walked four, and gave up two runs on one hit in the final 2.1 innings.

Game Two

Greenawalt, Alejandro Casanova, and White each had a hit for the Riverhawks in the second game.

AACC loaded the bases in the first and had runners in scoring position in the third and fifth, but was unable to get across.

Wild pitching helped the Cougars score three in the first. FCC scored another run in the second on a solo home run, and added five runs on five hits in the fourth, including two on a home run. A walk and a wild pitch in the fifth set up FCC for the game-ending run, an RBI single.

Evan Pohlman got the start for AACC, allowing nine runs (four earned) on six hits while striking out six and walking two in 3.2 innings. Jackson Burchick walked three and gave up the final run on one hit.

AACC (19-17) is back at Skip Brown Field on Tuesday, April 9, in a 1 p.m. NJCAA Region 20 divisional doubleheader against CCBC Essex.
