Baseball Sweeps Three-Game Series With Orange County

ARNOLD, Md. – The Anne Arundel Community College baseball team swept a three-game series from visiting Orange County Community College this weekend. The Riverhawks won a single, nine-inning game against the Broncos, 9-3, Saturday evening at Joe Cannon Stadium. AACC rallied to claim both games at Skip Brown Field Sunday, winning 5-3 and 7-3 to pull even on the year at 8-8.

Saturday Game

AACC scored four runs in the fourth and eighth innings Saturday night to back a strong combined outing on the mound from starter Jack Davidson, reliever Evan Pohlman, and closer Zach Ford. Davidson struck out four and allowed one run on four hits through the first four innings. Pohlman struck out seven batters and gave up two unearned runs on two hits in three relief innings before Ford tossed the final two, allowing just two hits.

Alejandro Casanova went 3-for-4 with a three-run triple in the eighth that cemented the win.

Sebastian Casanova drove in a run in the second to put AACC on the board. An OCCC single with one out and runners on first and second plated a run in the fourth. The Broncos then loaded the bases but Davidson struck out the next batter before fielding a groundout to get out of the jam.

AACC loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth and after a close play at the plate denied them the tying run, Griffin Klein drew a walk to tie it up. Sam Ross then drove in two runs with a single up the middle. Klein came around to score on an errant throw to make it 5-2 Riverhawks.

Pohlman struck out three batters in the fifth but not before the Broncos plated two unearned runs in the inning on two hits and a passed ball.

AACC's four-run eighth came with two outs. Conner Bosley drove in the Riverhawks' first run with a bases-loaded single. Casanova plated the next three with a triple to deep right.

Sunday Game One

Ross robbed a home run over the center field fence to end OCCC's fourth inning before taking over on the mound to earn the win allowing just one hit over the final three innings. He also drove in AACC's first run in the bottom of the fourth to spark the Riverhawks' comeback.

Sebastian Casanova crossed on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-all in the bottom of the fourth. After a Broncos one-hit fifth, AACC scored three runs on a pair of hits to take the 5-3 lead. Donny White drove in a run with a single to left center. With runners on first and second, Chris Ricks's double to right scored a pair. Sebastian Casanova capped the scoring with a sac fly.

Orange County got just one base runner in the final two innings, and AACC shut the Broncos down in order in the seventh for the win.

Sunday Game Two

AACC again came back to win in Sunday's night cap, scoring three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth. Orange County had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the seventh when Ricks made a leaping catch at the top of the right field fence to end the game.

The Broncos scored single runs in the first, third, and fourth innings to hold a 3-0 lead. Pohlman drive in two runs with a double to center. Then with the bases loaded, Orange turned a double play, but AACC scored a run anyway to tie it up, 3-3.

After retiring the Broncos in order in the top of the fifth, AACC got to work again, this time plating four runs on four hits and a trio of errors. With runners on the corners and one out, a dropped fly in right field sent the first Riverhawks run across. After an out on the next batter, AACC had runners on the corners again as Ricks drove in one with a single tucked inside the left field line. A passed ball put runners on second and third for Blake Nawab, who drove in two runs with a single through the left side.

AACC reliever Nicco Holland retired the Broncos in order in the sixth, fanning the final two batters. But in the seventh, after a passed ball and a throwing error, the Broncos had the bases loaded with two outs setting up Ricks's game-winning catch.

Holland got the win, striking out seven while allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in five innings of work. White fanned four while allowing one run on three hits through the first two innings.
