Catonsville Sends Baseball to Region 20 Tourney Elimination Game

NORTH EAST, MD. – The sixth seed Anne Arundel Community College baseball team fell to the number two seed CCBC Catonsville, 9-0, in seven innings Friday in the 2023 Region 20 Division II Baseball Tournament. The Riverhawks will face the fifth seed CCBC Essex in an elimination game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cecil College.

Catcher Sam D'Amelio collected two of the Riverhawks' four hits in the game, hitting singles in the second and fourth innings. AACC loaded the bases in the fourth, only to see the final two batters strike out to keep the Riverhawks off the board. AACC did not get another runner on base in the game.

Riverhawks starter Kyle Wortz held the Cardinals hitless until the third when they scored their first run on their first hit of the game. Reliever Luke Emory got the call with the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth. He worked the count full before hitting the batter, sending the second run across. Emory induced a flyout to right to end further damage.

But a wild fifth inning saw Catonsville score six runs, starting with a two-run home run over the high centerfield fence. The Cardinals cranked out five total hits in the inning, scoring two on a double, one on a triple, then on a sac fly to make it 8-0. Emory was tagged for four runs before giving way to Jordan Bonhoff with one out.

Catonsville hit the final dagger in the sixth, a solo home run over the centerfield fence.

The Riverhawks split the season series with Essex, dropping a 10-0 game in five innings before holding on to the lead for a 5-4 win in game two back on March 28. Essex lost to top seed, Frederick, 8-2, in Friday's tournament game.
