Baseball Drops Opening Weekend Series at Surry

DOBSON, N.C. – The Anne Arundel Community College opened the 2023 season facing Surry on the road in a four-game series this weekend. The Riverhawks dropped the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, 3-0, before taking the Knights to extra innings in the nightcap, only to fall, 6-5, in eight innings. On Sunday AACC had an early lead in a pair of one-run losses, 4-3 and 5-4.

AACC went a perfect 7-for-7 in stolen base attempts in the weekend series, led by three from Ethan Grieb and two from John Greenawalt.

Christian Murphy led the Riverhawks at the plate with a 5-for-12 series, driving in a pair of runs and scoring twice.  Greenawalt hammered out four hits with a pair of doubles and an RBI on the weekend. Alejandro Casanova hit his first career home run, a three-run shot to tie the game in the top of the 7th of Saturday's second game.

Aiden Cassily threw four scoreless innings in his first career start in Sunday's first game, striking out four and walking five while giving up five hits. Jacob McDonald fanned five and walked none as the starter of Saturday's opener, surrendering one run in four innings. Will D'Antoni struck out five in a four-inning relief appearance in Saturday's nightcap. D'Antoni allowed one run on one hit while also walking three.

AACC is scheduled to be back in action on Friday, February 10, in an 11 a.m. home doubleheader against Virginia Peninsula Community College before traveling to the Gators for two the following day.
