Allegany Sweeps Baseball in Region Opener

ARNOLD, MD – Visiting Allegany College of Maryland swept the Anner Arundel Community College baseball team in the Region 20 opening doubleheader for both teams Tuesday. The Trojans won the first game, 11-4, then came back to win the second, 8-6.

Lukas Lawrence went 2-for-5 with and RBI and a pair of stolen bases on two attempts. Christian Murphy drove in one run on 2-for-5 hitting while drawing a pair of walks and scoring twice. Nicholas Toskov scored three runs and drove in another on a 2-for-6 day at the plate, also stealing his team-leading seventh base of the year. Parker Jones and Andrew Wells each drove in a pair of runs.

Allegany (5-0) jumped out to a big lead early in the first game before AACC got on the board on a Brian Connolly RBI groundout in the bottom of the third to make it 10-1 in favor of the Trojans.

AACC (2-10) added a pair of runs in the fourth as leadoff batter Reed Matkins walked and then took advantage of errant pitching to come all the way around, eventually scoring on a wild pitch. With runners on second and third, Lawrence plated one on a single to center, making it 10-3, in favor of the visitors.

Allegany added one in the fifth and AACC added another in the seventh on a Jones sac fly to center.

Jacob McDonald was tagged with the loss for the Riverhawks with four runs on five hits in two innings of work. Jack Hogan gave up six runs (four earned) on five hits in the third inning before giving way to Chance Meadows, who struck out one and walked one in the fourth. Matt Wisniewski closed out the final three innings with one run on four hits while striking out one.

In the second game, AACC racked up six runs in the bottom of the first on just three hits, plating the first on a bases loaded walk before Murphy drove in one with the bases loaded. A wild pitch send the next run across before Wells and Toskov drove in runs wits bases-loaded singles.

Allegany got right back in the game, scoring three runs on the second and two in the third to take the lead before Will D'Antoni came in for the Riverhawks to strike out six in three scoreless innings of work. D'Antoni allowed one run in the seventh, giving way to Andrew Leginze to get the final out.

Allegany closer John Dhima struck out four AACC batters in the final two innings to preserve the win.

Brady MacDonald got the start for AACC, striking out three while allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits through two innings. Matt Johnson took the loss with two runs on four hits.

AACC is back in action at home on Saturday, March 5, in an 11 am doubleheader against CCBC Dundalk.
