Baseball Drops Opener at Richard Bland

SUTHERLAND, VA – The Anne Arundel Community College baseball team opened the season Thursday with a doubleheader at Richard Bland College. The Riverhawks fell, 5-0, in the first game and 12-0 in the nightcap. Parker Jones and William Burchick each had two hits for the Riverhawks on the day.

In the first game, the Statesmen took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run triple and an RBI ground out. Starter Gavin Umphries struck out the final batter to strand a runner and get out of the inning. Umphries took the loss with one inning of work.

Andrew Edwards came on for four relief innings, striking out two and allowing just one hit. Luke Emory closed out the game, allowing two runs in the sixth on a hit and an error, but like Umphries in the first, struck out the final batter and stranded one.

AACC loaded the bases in the seventh on singles from Jones and Burchick, but the Statesmen ended the inning with a double play to preserve the shutout.

In the nightcap, the Statesmen led 3-0 after two and added two runs in both the fourth and fifth before closing out the game in the sixth with five runs, including the game-ending two-run double.

AACC had runners on in the second, third, and fifth, but was unable to generate any runs.

Starter Shane Emerson took the loss allowing two runs on four hits while striking out one in the first inning. Relievers Matt Johnson, Brady McDonald, and William D'Antoni each went a little over an inning before Matthew Wisniewski faced the final batter.

Next up, the Riverhawks (0-2) travel to Surry College on Sunday, February 6, for an 11 am doubleheader.
