Volleyball Earns First Win of the Season

ARNOLD, MD - Anne Arundel Community College women's volleyball team earned their first win of the season with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-18) victory over CCBC Essex on Tuesday night (September 26).

Although winning the first set, Essex struggled to get their offense in any sort of rhythm as the Riverhawks took control of the next three.  Sophmore Nicolette Powell (St. Augustine, FL/South River) kick started the offensive momentum for the Riverhawks by putting on a dominating display at the service line. Powell had 18 kills, 8 aces and 22 digs. Freshman Emma Matheu (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) had 7 kills for the night and sophomore Emelyn Wilkerson (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) recorded 6.

Head Coach Greg McDivitt stated, "I said at the beginning of the season that if we play well together we will start winning games. Tonight, the team played really well together.  I was most impressed with our defense and serving but when it comes down to why we won the game is was how all the girls were communicating so well.  When we communicate, we produce better passes which then trickles down to kills."

The Riverhawks will compete for their next victory on the road as they face the Skipjacks of Chesapeake College on Thursday, September 29th at 7:00 p.m.
