Early Lead Carries Women's Soccer Past Roadrunners

COLUMBIA, MD – Led by two goals from Aileen Rivera Cubero, the Anne Arundel Community College women's soccer team defeated Rowan College South Jersey – Gloucester Sunday at the Dragon Tournament hosted by Howard Community College. The win marked the fourth in a row for AACC, the longest win streak since the 2017-18 season.

The two-goal effort from Rivera Cubero capped a four-goal weekend for the sophomore who also netted both goals in a 2-1 win over FIT Saturday.

Alyssa Begunich added a pair of assists for the Riverhawks, Morgan Argubright chipped in with a goal and assist, and Erika Jackson scored on a penalty kick.

Six of the game's seven combined goals came in the first half, including three in a six-minute span in the later moments of the stanza.Begunich connected with Rivera Cubero less than nine minutes into the game to put AACC on the board. Leigh Swietanski knotted the game with an unassisted tally in the 18th minute before Argubright fed Rivera Cubero in the 31st minute to retake the lead.

Argurbright then took a pass from Begunich to give the Riverhawks a two-goal cushion less than four minutes later, but the Roadrunners quickly cut the lead back to one, scoring just over two minutes later.

Jackson connected on a penalty kick with 31 seconds left in the first half to again put the Riverhawks up by two.

The Roadrunners got one back in the 69th minute, courtesy of Kayla Davila, and their goalkeeper Allison Gebhart made six second-half saves to keep AACC of the board in the frame.

Sarah Ward improved to 4-3 with 10 saves evenly split between halves. The Roadrunners outshot AACC, 26-17, but the Riverhawks led in shots on goal, 14-10.

AACC travels to Hagerstown for a 2 pm game on Tuesday, September 17.
