Game Notes

Facing the NJCAA DIII Region 20 Dragons of Howard Community College would mark the first Divisional & Regional/Conference match-up of the season for the Riverhawks.

Proving the great competition that was expected, the first half brought steady action from both teams. As the first half concluded the score was 0-0 with each team recording almost identical stats.

The story changed during the second half as the Dragons completely opened fire – out shooting the Riverhawks 19-2. Despite their relentless attacks Riverhawk goalkeeper Deanna Valerien (Gambrills, MD/North County), better known as De, held strong for her team, keeping the score at 0-0 as time expired.

As the first overtime produced few opportunities for each team, the match would continue on into a double overtime period. The Dragons were able to place themselves in multiple scenarios to get the win but once again, Valerien maintained her dominance in front of the goal.

The 0-0 final had Howard outshooting AACC 35-9, but De would finish with an unbelievable 22 saves – a statistic that now has her ranked number one for saves in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MD JUCO).
